A survey of the health needs of inhabitants in Jung Neung area


Abstract
In order to recognize the need of health center, and to identify the health needs of inhabitants (focussed on maternal, child, and family planning services) this survey was conducted by visiting the subjects. and interviewing with structured questionaires during the period of April 3, 1976 to June 24,1976.
The subjects, 236 mothers who lived in 3-dong Jung Neung where the attached health center medical college Korea university was located for improving community health, of this survey were selected by ransom sampling.
From the results of this study, the following conclusions were obtained, and this data would be utilized for selecting the area for nursing students¢¥ public health activities.
1. About general characteristics of the subjects:
(1) The majority of age group was 30-39 years old as showing 42.0%
(2) The majority of education level was elementary school graduates as showing 33. 1%
(3) The socioeconomic status showed that most of the subjects were in middle (47.0%), and low (41.1%) classes.
The average number of family members were 5.0
The average number of rooms provided for each family were 2.0
2. About health center:
(1) Utilization rate 51.3%
(2) Difficulties in utilization; Did not know how to utilize it 44.5%
Did not want to wait the long lines 20.8%
3. About maternal health:
(1) The subjects recognized the importance of prenatal care (95.9%), but the subjects did not know how often they should visit the health center. They had knowledge about periodical visiting to health center during pregnancy.
Early stage of pregnancy 37.5%
Middle stage of pregnancy 42.7%
Late stage of pregnancy 22.5%
(2) The subjects recognized that the hospital delivery was ideal (91.0%), and 55. 1% experienced hom: deliveries.
() The subjects had proper knowledge about pogt-pattuih period (25. 8Y.) 4 About infants:
(1) The place for vaccination
Hospital 47.9%
Health Center 27.1 %
Jung Neung Health Center 5.5%
(2) The subjects knew more than one kinds of vaccinations (89%), and 35.6% understood that only one vaccination was enough, or they were not so sure.
(3) The subjects answered proper time of various vaccinations (knowledge).

(4) The subjects reported breast milk as an ideal food for infants (81.4%)
(5) The subjects had experience of feeding their colostrum (56.2%)
(6) The subjects understood that weaning should be completed within a year (64.0%)
(7) The subjects¢¥ children had experienced with communicable disease.
They never exposed to communicable disease (52.1 %)
Measle was reported with the highest morbidity rate (28.0%) among communicabe diseases. 5 About family planning service:
(1) The subjects understood the meaning of family planning (60.2%)
(2) The subjects were in favor of family planning (98.3%)
(3) The subjects knew more than two contraceptive methods (85.2%), and 76.3% practiced it, and about two third of the subjects did not know its advantages, disadvantages, the method to use, and its precautions.
(4) The subjects wanted to know more about family planning (61.4%)
